Gender equality is when women and men enjoys the same right, opportunities and representations in the society, including in the participation to socio-economic activities and developmental decision-making. Its preferment in the Philippines is accorded to the internationally agreed frameworks and commitments such as the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) where the Philippines is signatory in 1980, and the Beijing Platform for Action in 1995 where the different countries and the United Nations (UN) agreed to promote gender mainstreaming as a strategy to ensure that gender perspective is reflected in all policies and programs at the international, national and regional levels.
The Philippines is also one of the member-countries of the UN that adopted the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) Declaration in September 2000. One of the eight main equality and empowerment of women. As the monitoring of the MDGs comes to an end in year 2017, there are on-going efforts on the formulation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which still include a stand-alone goal on the promotion of gender equality and women empowerment. The aforementioned commitments and developments have made the generation of timely gender statistics imperative.
