Data on marriages presented in this special release were obtained from the timely and late registered marriages at the Office of the City Civil Registrar of Muntinlupa and submitted to the Office of the Civil Registrar General through the Philippine Statistics Authority-National Capital Region Provincial Statistical Office V (PSA-NCR PSO V). The information presented includes marriages that occurred from January to December 2022 based on data files received by the PSA-Central Office from the PSOs that were registered as of 31 July 2023. The figures presented herein are not adjusted for under registration.

Number of registered marriages slightly increased in 2022.

In 2022, the City of Muntinlupa registered a total of 1,550 marriages, reflecting a 15.7 percent increase from the 1,340 marriages recorded in 2021. Compared to pre-pandemic figures, there was a 21.6 percent decrease in registered marriages between 2019 and 2022. The crude marriage rate (CMR) rose to 2.8, or two marriages per thousand population, up from 2.4 per thousand in 2021. On average, four marriages were solemnized daily. (See Figure 1)

Most number of marriages were registered in December.

The month of December was the most preferred month to tie the knot in 2022 with 250 marriages (16.1% share). The month of February ranked second with 142 marriages (9.2% share), followed by the month of June with 133 marriages (8.6% share). The least number of marriage occurrences in 2022 was the month of January with 96 marriages (6.2% share). The months of July and November followed with 103 (6.6% share) and 113 (7.3% share) marriage occurrences.

In terms of daily average, the months of December and February recorded higher daily average compared to the city average with more than four marriages per day. Meanwhile, the month of January and July had the lowest daily average of three marriages per day. (See Figure 2)

Majority of couples married between ages 25 to 29 years.

In 2022, the majority of women who entered into marriage were 29 years old, with their male counterparts also predominantly marrying at the same age. Among various age groups, the largest proportion of brides, accounting for 38.1%, were within the 25 to 29 age range. Conversely, the majority of grooms, comprising 34.1%, were aged between 30 and 34 years. These data suggest that the preferred age for marriage in the City of Muntinlupa is between 25 and 29 years for women, while for men it is between 30 and 34 years. (See Figure 3)

Additionally, two brides, representing 0.1 percent, were teenagers, reflecting a decrease compared to the previous year's figure of five brides, or 0.4 percent, out of 1,340 marriages. Meanwhile, 43 men, comprising 2.8 percent of the grooms, married at age 60 and over, a significant rise from the 17 grooms reported in the previous year.

Other religious rites are most frequent among types of marriage ceremonies.

In 2022, of the total registered marriages in the City of Muntinlupa, 811, or 52.3 percent, were solemnized through various religious rites, marking a 2.3 percentage point decrease from 2021's 54.6 percent share. Conversely, two in ten marriages, totaling 418 or 27.0 percent, were officiated in the Roman Catholic Church, while 321 marriages, representing 20.7 percent, were conducted through civil ceremonies. Most of the couples were single before they tied the knot.

Almost all the couples in the City of Muntinlupa were first-timers or single brides and grooms prior to their marriage in 2022. It translated to 1,510, or 97.4 percent, and 1,475, or 95.2 percent, respectively, among the registered marriages in the city. Only a small percentage of brides and grooms were widowed and divorced prior to the marriage. (See Figure 5)

Nine out of ten marriages are timely registered.

Ninety-nine percent or 1,544 number of marriages registered in the City of Muntinlupa were registered on time while six or 0.4 percent were registered late. (See Figure 6)

Technical Notes

Civil Registration is the recording in the appropriate civil registers, vital acts and events that affect the civil status of individuals.

Vital Statistics are derived from information obtained at the time when the occurrences of vital events and their characteristics are inscribed in a civil register.

Vital acts and events are the births, deaths, fetal deaths, marriages, and all such events that have something to do with an individual's entrance and departure from life together with the changes in civil status that may occur to a person during his lifetime. Recording of these events in the civil register is known as vital or civil registration and the resulting documents are called vital records.

Marriage - is a special contract of permanent union between a man and a woman entered into in accordance with law for the establishment of conjugal and family life. It is the foundation of the family, a social institution that is governed by law and not subject to stipulation.
