Data on marriages presented in this special release were obtained from the timely and late registered marriages at the Office of the City Civil Registrar of Pasay and submitted to the Office of the Civil Registrar General through the Philippine Statistics Authority-National Capital Region Provincial Statistical Office V (PSA-NCR PSO V). The information presented includes marriages that occurred from January to December 2022 based on data files received by the PSA-Central Office from the PSOs that were registered as of 31 July 2023. The figures presented herein are not adjusted for under registration.

Number of registered marriages increased by nearly half in 2022.

In 2022, Pasay City registered a total of 2,322 marriages, reflecting a 40.6 percent increase from the 1,652 marriages recorded in 2021. Compared to pre-pandemic figures, there was a 19.4 percent decrease in registered marriages between 2019 and 2022. The crude marriage rate (CMR) rose to 5.3, or five marriages per thousand population, up from 3.8 per thousand in 2021. On average, six marriages were solemnized daily. (See Figure 1)

Most number of marriages were registered in December.

The month of December was the most preferred month to tie the knot in 2022 with 311 marriages (13.4% share). The month of August ranked second with 277 marriages (11.9% share), followed by the month of June with 226 marriages (9.7% share). The least number of marriage occurrences in 2022 was the month of January with 118 marriages (5.1% share). The months of November and September followed with 142 (6.1% share) and 162 (7.0% share) marriage occurrences.

In terms of daily average, the months of December, August, and June recorded higher daily average compared to the city average with more than six marriages per day. Meanwhile, the month of January had the lowest daily average of four marriages per day. (See Figure 2)

Most women marry younger while men prefer later age.

In 2022, the majority of women who entered into marriage were 28 years old, while their male counterparts predominantly married at the age of 31. Among the age groups, the highest proportion of brides, accounting for 35.3%, were aged between 25 and 29 years. In contrast, the largest share of grooms, comprising 31%, married within the 30 to 34 age range. These findings suggest that the preferred age for marriage among women in Pasay City is between 25 and 29 years, whereas most men preferred to marry at a slightly older age, between 30 and 34 years. (See Figure 3)

Additionally, nine brides, representing 0.4 percent, were teenagers, reflecting a slight increase compared to the previous year's figure of eight brides, or 0.5 percent, out of 1,652 marriages. Meanwhile, 123 men, comprising 5.3 percent of the grooms, married at age 60 and over, a significant rise from the 27 grooms reported in the previous year.

Other religious rites are most frequent among types of marriage ceremonies.

In 2022, of the total registered marriages in Pasay City, 1,821 marriages, accounting for 78.4 percent, were solemnized through various religious rites, reflecting a 1.1 percentage point increase from the 77.4 percent recorded in 2021. In contrast, one in eight marriages, totaling 293 or 12.6 percent, were conducted through civil ceremonies, while 207 marriages, representing 8.9 percent, were officiated within the Roman Catholic tradition. Additionally, there was one reported marriage conducted under Muslim tradition. (See Figure 4)

Most of the couples were single before they tied the knot.

Almost all the couples in Pasay City were first-timers or single brides and grooms prior to their marriage in 2022. It translated to 2,245, or 96.7 percent, and 2,104, or 90.6 percent, respectively, among the registered marriages in the city. Only a small percentage of brides and grooms were widowed and divorced prior to the marriage. (See Figure 5)

Nine out of ten marriages are timely registered.

Ninety-nine percent or 2,311 number of marriages registered in Pasay City were registered on time while 11 or 0.5 percent were registered late. (See Figure 6)

Technical Notes

Civil Registration is the recording in the appropriate civil registers, vital acts and events that affect the civil status of individuals.

Vital Statistics are derived from information obtained at the time when the occurrences of vital events and their characteristics are inscribed in a civil register.

Vital acts and events are the births, deaths, fetal deaths, marriages, and all such events that have something to do with an individual's entrance and departure from life together with the changes in civil status that may occur to a person during his lifetime. Recording of these events in the civil register is known as vital or civil registration and the resulting documents are called vital records.

Marriage - is a special contract of permanent union between a man and a woman entered into in accordance with law for the establishment of conjugal and family life. It is the foundation of the family, a social institution that is governed by law and not subject to stipulation.
