Civil Registration is a continuous, permanent and compulsory recording of vital events occurring in the life of an individual such as birth, marriage and death as well as court decrees, and legal instruments affecting the civil status of an individual in appropriate registers as mandated by Act no. 3753, the Civil Registry Code.
This special release presents data on death statistics which occurred in year 2020. Statistics were based on the death registered in the City of Marikina. The data on the number of death presented in this regular annual release were obtained from the vital events registered either timely or belatedly, at the City Civil Registry Office of City of Marikina.
DEATH
City of Marikina death population increases by 0.52 percent
There were 4,648 total registered deaths in the City of Marikina in the year 2020, recording an increase of 0.52 percent from 4,624 of the previous year.
Out of the total registered death for the year 2020, 4,578 or 98.5 percent were registered timely while 70 or 1.5 percent were registered late. (Table 1)
More males die than females
Male deaths with 2,604 or 56.0 percent outnumbered registered female deaths with 2,044 or 44.0 percent. On the average, there were about 13 persons who died daily in year 2020. The data of the previous year showed a minimal difference in the death of males and females with 2,620 or 56.7 percent and 2,004 or 43.3 percent, respectively. (Table 2)
August recorded the highest number of deaths for year 2020
In the number of deaths by month, August recorded the highest figure with 485 or 10.4 percent of the total deaths, followed by July and May with 458 or 9.9 percent and 426 or 9.2 percent, respectively.
On the other hand, the highest number of registered deaths on the previous year was recorded in the month of January with 509 or 11.0 percent of the total registered deaths. (Table 3)
Three in Four deaths are medically attended
Out of the total reported deaths in the City of Marikina on 2020, 3,569 or 76.8 percent were medically attended.
Medically attended deaths are those attended by health authority, private physician, public health officer, hospital authority and other skilled health personnel. (Table 4)
Registered deaths by place of occurrence
Registered deaths in the City of Marikina on 2020 occurred mostly in the hospital with 2,853 recording a decrease of 11.4 percent from 3,220 cases in the year of 2019. (Table 5)
Persons in the age group 60 to 69 years recorded the highest deaths
Considering the age of the document owners, 1,028 or 22.1 percent of the total deaths were at Sixty (60) to Sixty-nine (69) years at the time of death. This was higher than the previous year where same age group recorded 957 deaths.
The second highest age group posted 882 or 19.0 percent of the total deaths who died at the age seventy (70) to seventy-nine (79). (Table 6)
Acute myocardial infarction is the most diagnosed cause of death in 2020
In the City of Marikina, acute myocardial infarction recorded the highest cause of death in year 2020 with 879 or 18.9 percent of the total registered deaths. This was followed by Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and Type 2 diabetes mellitus with 565 or 12.2 percent and 244 or 5.2 percent, respectively. By sex, similar trend with only a minimal difference in the ranking among the cause of deaths was observed. (Table 7)
