16 September 2023 – QUEZON CITY. In line with the 2023 International Coastal Cleanup (ICC), the NCR PSO II evinced their support in protecting and serving our environment. There were 11 employees from NCR PSO II who volunteered in the ICC on 16 September 2023 at Tullahan River, Barangay San Bartolome, Quezon City which was administered by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources Metropolitan Environmental Office-East (DENR MEO-East).

DENR MEO-East, OIC-Director, Engr. Virgilio E. Licuan said in his opening remarks, “Ang Tullahan River ay connected sa ating karagatan, Manila Bay. At may utos galing Supreme Court na linisin at ibalik ang dating kalagayan ng Manila Bay, ito ay pwedeng languyan, kaya lang sa ngayon, dahil sa dami ng basura, ito po ay nadedegrade. Kaya dati dati kung napapasyal po kayo sa Manila Bay ay nakikita ninyo yung patong patong na basura, pero unti-unti na itong nababawasan dahil sa ginagawa nating paglilinis”. He also encouraged the volunteers to minimize the use of plastic when they are in shopping, use eco bag instead. The NCR PSO II and other volunteers was tasked to record the kind and number of wastes they had collected in the “Trash Data Form”. The form was then submitted to Ocean Conservancy for a thorough analysis to succor fight against global plastic pollution. Coastal cleanups led by various DENR offices and bureaus were held simultaneously in different areas including Las Piñas-Parañaque Wetland Park, Baseco Beach in Manila, and in the provinces of Bataan, Batangas, Cebu, Bohol, Dumaguete, Negros Oriental, and Zamboanga Del Sur. Numerous volunteers were present including individuals and groups from the national and local government agencies, youth organizations, academe, civil society, civic groups, and the private sector. According to the research of Ocean Conservancy, the Philippines gathered 249.382 metric tons of waste during the 2022 ICC. The collected wastes are the following such as stirrers, straws, grocery bags, food containers, beverage bottles, food wrappers, and bottle caps.  -RSSO-NCR Provincial Statistics Office II
